Ichneumonid identification is often a difficult undertaking, not
aided by the fact that the terminology often varies between authors. This page aims to explain most of
the terms that might come up in a key and their many synonyms. Alternative terminology is given within parentheses in the text below.
1. Antennae
- ann: annelus
- ant: antennal segments (all flagellomeres in the flagellum + scape and pedicel)
- fl: flagellomeres (compsing the flagellum)
- ped: pedicel
- sc: scape
- ty: tyloids
It is imprtant to note the difference between flagellomeres and antennal segments. When counting flagellomeres you skip the scape and pedicel, but include them when counting antennal segments.
2. Head
- ac: antennal carina
- ant: antennal socket (= antennal foramen)
- atp: anterior tentorial pit (= clypeal fovea, frontal pit, fovea tentorialis anterior, fovea clypealis, praetentorina)
- cl: clypeus
- cls: clypeal sulcus (= clypeal grove, "groove between face and clypeus")
- dtp: dorsal tentorial pit
- eye: eye
- fa: face (= supraclypeal area)
- fao: inner orbit (= facial orbit)
- fm: foramen magnum
- fro: frons (= supra-antennal area)
- g: gena
- gc: genal carina (= lower occipital carina)
- hyb: hypostomal bridge
- hyc: hypostomal carina
- hyp: hypostoma
- io: inner orbit
- lap: labial palp (= labial palpus)

- mas: malar space (= malar area, cheek)
