1. Body with white, somtimes almost blueish, spots. Base color black.
2. Body with yellow spots (sometimes red spots also present). Base color black, redish, or brownish.
3. Body black with red bands on at least the 2nd and 3rd tergites (shape of tergites different than illustrated).
4. Body entirely black or with light areas yellow and limited to scutellum and mesoscutum.

This key covers all Rhyssinae species listed as occurring in northern Europe (2024). Two members of Pimplinae,
Pseudorhyssa alpestris
and
Pseudorhyssa nigricornis
, are also included due to them sharing the transverse striae on the mesoscutum that is otherwise unique to Rhyssinae.
