Ascogaster varipes
Wesmael, 1835
Overview
Taxonomy
Ascogaster varipes
Description
A common species with a strongly curved metasomal carapace (ventral opening much shorter than total length). It is most easily recognized by a strong semi-circular depression located at the base of each mandible; a characteristic not shared by any other northern Palearctic species. The face is often intermediate between what is seen in species with smooth puncture faces and those with rugose faces, though the sculpture rarely contrasts strongly with that of the clypeus. The coloration may vary greatly.
