Phaenolobus saltans

Description

A rare wasp that is superficially similar to the more common Phaenolobus terebrator, though P. saltans has the abdomen extensively red. The areolet of the forewing is open distally (3rs-m absent) and the notauli are distinct. Claws of fore and middle tarsi with subapical tooth. The ovipositor is shorter than the abdomen, which is unusually short for Acaenitinae.

Ecology

P. saltans has reportedly been reared from the clear-wing moth Chamaesphecia schizoceriformis in Iran. This is unusual as most Acaenitines are parasitoids of beetle larvae.

Distribution

P. saltans has a palearctic distribution.
