Steps
Taxa:
Tergites
chevron_right
1. At least tergites 2-3 with triangular areas defined by two diagonal grooves. At least one tergite with a distinct central carina.
2. Tergites without triangular areas defined by two diagonal grooves and without central carinae.
3. Tergites without triangular areas.
Nervellus
chevron_right
Nervellus intercepted far above middle.
Nervellus intercepted at or around middle.
Nervellus clearly intercepted below middle.
Frons
chevron_right
Frons with two tubercules connected to the antennal sockets.
Frons with two horns separated from the antennal sockets.
Frons with a single horn between the antennal socket.
Frons with two broad ridges along the orbits (occipital carina interrupted by a deep depression).
Frons without horns or ridges.
Areolet
chevron_right
Areolet present.
Areolet absent.
Metasoma color
chevron_right
1. Metasoma with at least one tergite predominantly red.
2. Metasoma with red, yellow or white transverse stripes on several tergites.
3. Metasoma predominantly black (posterior edges of the tergites sometimes weakly sclerotized).
Tergite sculpture
chevron_right
Tergites polished and shiny, without microsculpture or very weakly punctate.
At least the first tergites with distinct microsculpture, usually matte.
Hairiness
chevron_right
Head and body covered with long erect hairs.
Hairs on head and body short.
Ovipositor length
chevron_right
Ovipositor equal to or longer than the hind tibia.
Ovipositor shorter than the hind tibia.
Hind tarsi
chevron_right
Hind tarsi with the first and often second segments mostly black and at least the third and fourth ones white. Base of hind tibia usually with a white spot.
Hind tarsi different.
Ovipositor apex
chevron_right
Apex of ovipositor with a dorsal nodus and ventral teeth.
Ovipositor without dorsal nodus. Ventral teeth usually absent.
Mesopleuron
chevron_right
Mesopleuron marked by yellow, white or red centrally.
Mesopleuron black centrally.
Scutellum
chevron_right
Scutellum with an apical spine.
Scutellum without spine.
Epicnemial carina/Mandible
chevron_right
Epicnemial carina absent. Mandible appearing almost tridentate due to the upper tooth being weakly subdivided and much wider than the lower tooth.
Epicnemial carina usually present. Mandible usually with both teeth approximately of same width and of normal build.
Genal carina
chevron_right
Genal carina sinuate and complete, postgena twisted onto the genal plane.
Genal carina more or less straight, if not then it doesn't reach mandible.
Malar space
chevron_right
Malar space about 2x mandible width and around maximum temple length.
Malar space rarely approaching 2x mandible length and much shorter than maximum temple length.

Info
This key covers all Banchinae genera and some species listed as occurring in northern Europe. It is primarily focused on females but identification of males belonging to most genera should be possible, except when distinguishing
Helotorus
,
Lissonota
and
Cryptopimpla
.
Two rare species,
Alloplasta tomentosa
and
Alloplasta nigripes
, are currently not included.
