Adelognathus Holmgren, 1857

Description

Adelognathus is the only genus in Adelognathinae. All species are small, about 5-8 mm long, best recognized by the unusually low number of flagellomeres (12 in all but one species, A. thomsoni, which has 13). Additionally, the labrum is widely exposed and of a comparable size to the clypeus. The coloration is almost always inconspicuous, with tones of yellow, brown, black and very rarely red.

Biology

All known species are gregarious or solitary ectoparasitoids of symphytan larvae.

There are 32 recorded hosts.

Host records from Taxapad^[1].

Distribution

Adelognathus has a Holarctic distribution, with about 30 species occurring in northern Europe. Little is known of each species' range and conservation status, a consequence of how rarely Adelognathus is collected.

Known from the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions, with records from 85 countries and regions. Records from GBIF and the Bugweb collection are shown on the map.

Country records from Taxapad^[1], Dyntaxa^[2], Artsnavnebasen^[3] and FinBIF^[4].

Identification

A key to northern European species is provided here which is almost entirely based on Kasparyan (1990).
